National Parks Road Trip & Alaska Sea/Land Cruise - April-June 2015
Some places we ate at on this trip, that were impressive for the food or the service or special features.
Aunt Lu's Cafe @ Sapp Brothers Travel Center, Clearfield, PA. Great food at a really low price. We each had a bowl of chili and a glass of water, the total cost with tax was less than $7.00. A delicious bowl of chili is very large and comes with a huge piece of delicious corn bread. After this great lunch we were still so full that we had just a snack for a late supper.
Berry Patch Restaurant, Orland, CA. Dale had BBQ Chicken sandwich & cole slaw. Ernie had BBQ Pork sandwich, cole slaw, and BBQ Beans. Everything was excellent, the prices were reasonable, and the waitress was efficient, helpful, and friendly.
Catfish & BBQ, Lebanon, MO. Ernie really liked everything he had (smoked hot links and BBQ beans). Dale did not think the smoked turkey was very good and the BBQ sauce was too weak even for her, but she said that the fried okra was the best she has ever had, this is the highest praise she could give as she rates restaurants that offer fried okra by how good their fried okra is.
Cliff Dwellers Lodge Restaurant, in Marble Canyon, AZ. This is a great place in the middle of nowhere. Ernie had the best black bean soup he has ever had and a burger with jalapeno peppers & pepper jack cheese on it that was delicious. For where it is and the great food, the prices are reasonable just a little more than a similar meal at home. Dale loved the place itself taking pictures of the grounds and buildings. The service was very good and extremely friendly.(picture)
Hard Luck Cafe, Branson, MO. Dale had a salad that came with lots of fruit & vegetables, she really enjoyed the salad. Ernie had chili & jalapeno poppers, the poppers were really disappointing and the best part of the chili was the Frank's Red Hot sauce Ernie put in it. But what was impressive about the place was that some of the servers take turns walking around the restaurant singing. The singers were very good. One of the singers saw Dale getting her camera out and came over to our table and sang to Ernie for Dale to take a (picture).
Pasta Avanti, corner of W 3rd Avenue & G Street, Anchorage, Alaska. Good food and extemely reasonable prices, the lowest we saw in Alaska. Customers order at the counter where they have slips to select the pasta, sauce, vegetables, and meats you want, plus what you want to drink.
Sawmill BBQ, Cahokia, IL. Great food and reasonable price. We both had a half rack of ribs which were the best we have had anyplace. The sides were really good, Dale was especially impressed with the coleslaw and apple sauce. Ernie liked the baked beans. Dale thought the mild BBQ sauce was the best she has had with just enough spice to make it interesting, but not enough to bother her.
Triple TJ's, Hurricane, UT. This restaurant is less than a mile from where we were staying when we visited Zion National Park. The food was great and the service extremely good and friendly. One of the wait staff was using one crutch to get around, we found out she is the proprietor and needs the crutch because she has a broken ankle. She was waiting tables holding two plates with one arm while maneuvering around the restaurant with the crutch. The first night we walked to the restaurant we arrived 5 minutes before closing and we were promptly seated. A few groups of people came in well after closing time and they were also seated. Finally, about 1 hour after closing time they turned a group of people away. The food was so good we returned the next night, this time arriving about an hour before closing. Dale was especially delighted with the vegetable side dishes in particular the coleslaw and green beans. The first night Ernie had pineapple chicken teriyaki that was better than any teriyaki meal he has had at an Asian restaurant of any type. The second night he had really good spaghetti with meat sauce and sauted jalopenos & onions. We asked where the name of the restaurant came from, the proprietor we met, her husband and their son all have names that start with T and their daughters name begins with J. The name was going to be Three T's and A J, but as she told us it would not fit on the sign so they went with Triple TJ's instead.
